Clarity - Insights From a Motivational Speaker
One way I can tell if someone knows what they are talking about is the simplicity of their language.
I have found that when people feel insecure they use big words, long words, too many syllables, adverbs and adjectives.
Clearly, 📚 Michael Bungay Stanier knows what he is talking about.
He speaks with clarity.
Here are a few examples from the notes I jotted down at 📚 Michael Bungay Stanier and Leanne Hughes public event a fortnight back.
On why people resist change …
“The status quo has a much heavier gravity than we realise”
On why leaders often fail to implement change…
“ After weeks/months of strategising change, they send an email to the troops. Done! They suffer the Marathon Effect: leaders cross the finish line not realising the rest of the organisation haven’t even started yet.”
On forward thinking around change…
“Microsoft wants to go from a know-it-all culture to a learn-it-all culture.”
Can you explain your topic simply?
If I want to understand something I write about it and post/publish it. That's how I get clarity.
Hopefully, I get some pushback. That’s how I find the holes in my argument.
That’s what Michael did at this event too. I’m sure he will do it again. The result will be sharp, active, precise language that will drive people to take action on his ideas.
What’s holding you back? Tell me. You’ll be surprised by the positive support you’ll be shown.

If we haven’t met yet…
I never considered myself good at change until I went from
-average shot to army sniper
-home movies to National Geographic cameraman
-fumbling card tricks to a professional magician
-never swinging a hammer to building a home
-high school dropout to published author
-business illiterate to building & selling a business
-stutterer to motivational speaker
Turns out I know how to change, I know how to make it simple, and I know how to stand on stage & make it fun so others want to do it too.
