Trust - Insights From a Motivational Speaker

change keynote speaker motivational speaker resilience

A story of trust.

Leanne Hughes risked personal embarrassment by reaching out to 📚 Michael Bungay Stanier, a person with a higher profile and reach. Let's do an event together she says. Michael agrees.

Why? Because he can see Leanne's integrity. She turns up over and over. Imperfectly. Improving each time. Owns up when it goes wrong.

People travel to Brisbane from afar as Melbourne, Perth and New Zealand. Why? Because they trust Leanne and Michael. Why? Because they can see their track record. They turn up over and over. Imperfectly. Improving. Being accountable.

Then Michael started his session saying, "This is an idea I'm playing with. It's new. Untested. I made up one of the key concepts last night." And the whole audience clapped him on. Why? Because we trusted Michael to deliver. It was imperfect. He improved it with our input. He owned his choices and openly explained his reasons.

And we all went away with more trust in Leanne and Michael than we arrived with.

Trust is sweet. Trust is fuel. Trust lubricates. Trust is currency.

Want some?

Trust that you'll be ok... you will.
Start shipping your ideas before they're perfect.
Let people throw stones at them.
Keep the ones that stay standing.
Discard the rest.
Thank everyone for their input.
Repeat.

In your head it seems much harder.
In reality it is simple.
Roll up your sleeves and start today.

If we haven’t met yet…

I never considered myself good at change until I went from

-average shot to army sniper

-home movies to National Geographic cameraman

-fumbling card tricks to a professional magician

-never swinging a hammer to building a home

-high school dropout to published author

-business illiterate to building & selling a business

-stutterer to motivational speaker

Turns out I know how to change, I know how to make it simple, and I know how to stand on stage & make it fun so others want to do it too.
