The McGurk Effect - Show This To Anyone Who Doubts The Power of Video To Reinforce Your Message

If you, or someone you know, is still sitting on the fence as to whether video - that's pictures and sound together - is more effective than text, audio or images delivered separately, then if you haven't already seen the McGurk Effect, you must.

I'll tell you briefly what happens and even though you know ahead what will happen, you can not escape it, you can't un-see this or un-hear this.

This is what you see.

A man is facing the camera and speaks these words
bah bah bah bah bah bah bah bah

The picture changes to the same man saying
fah fah fah fah fah fah fah fah

EXCEPT

he's not. He is only mouthing the 'f' sound. the soundtrack is repeated from the first part where he says 'bah'.

For the life of you, you will swear he is saying the words fah fah

I use this in my training sessions as an entree into a suite of psychological tools that video gifts us. When you use these wonderfully simple tools, you get an advantage over those who don't use them.

These tools work for two reasons:

1. The evolution of human brains has created wiring that is impossible for us to undo. Much like why does a dog do circles before slumping down for sleep?  These quirks are built-in. We can exploit them if we know about them. I learned the power of these in my training to become a magician. I earned an income from using them daily. That's how powerful they are.

2. Almost everyone alive has grown up watching TV, movies, online on a small rectangular screen. Whether we realise it or not, we have been conditioned to accept a set of rules that govern the believability of what we see on the small screen. It's a language of video that you subconsciously know but you haven't yet realised you know.

I love them because they are so wonderfully simple and reliable.
